Common Goal Player Cards

Patterns of Play teamed up with Common Goal to help unite the world of professional footballers into a shared commitment to give something back to society. Common Goal is a movement of football players who pledge to donate at least 1% of their wages to high-impact football charities. Since launching the initiative with Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata in August 2017, a myriad of star players from all over the world have joined including Mats Hummels, Giorgio Chiellini, Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan to name just a few.

Having a diverse and ever-increasing group of members presented a challenge of how to visually demonstrate that these individual players, from different clubs and countries, are all part of the same team. Our response was to design the Common Goal player cards, an elegant visual asset that creates a sense of consistency and camaraderie across the various members in the movement.

Since being implemented, the cards have become a central feature of the Common Goal brand, with the players proudly sharing them with their millions of followers to signify that they’ve joined the Common Goal team. They’ve generated countless impressions on social media, inspired playful appropriations from football fans and, most importantly, raised vital awareness of the movement around the world.
